Tomato - Beefsteak - Brandywine - Yellow (Lycopersicon esculentum cv. Yellow Brandywine) Organic Brandy Wine Yellow Open Pollinated Heirloom Tomatoes Vegetable
Annual
Indeterminate
Yellow Brandywine variety produces large deep golden yellow beefsteak shaped tomatoes having a creamy texture, that can weigh up to 2 pounds and are typically 1.5 lbs (0.7 kg). Fruits are juicy, and the apricot coloured flesh has a sweet and robust flavour that is also slightly acidic, more so than other orange or yellow coloured tomatoes, but not as tart.
Plants are indeterminate, or vining, with potato-like leaf foliage characteristic of true Brandywine tomato cultivars, and the large fruit grows along the sprawling vines with smooth oval, and pointy tipped, dark green leaves.
The appearance of Yellow Brandywine tomatoes can change from one year to the next, with some fruits having smooth skin while others are so ridged or scalloped that they resemble a pumpkin! Tomatoes love rich soil. Add some compost when setting out.
- Full Sun
- Start seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before last frost. Sow 1/4 in deep and keep soil warm. Transplant into 1 in cells or 2 in pots at 1-2 leaf stage. NOTE: If the plants get leggy due to lack of light, when you transplant them out, bury more of the plant stem. It will not affect the growth and the plant will produce roots along the buried stem.
- Germinates 7 to 14 days
- Spacing: 24 to 36 in apart.
- Staking tomatoes (indeterminate) should be transplanted into 3 to 4 in pots.
- Harden off the plants for 4 to 5 days after risk of frost has passed, then transplant outdoors.
- Maturity 80 days
- Seed Count: 10
